Meet The Lajee Crew

Mohammad Qasim

“I’m from Aida Camp. I’m 22 years old. I have 3 brothers and 3 sisters. My family is originally from Al-Kabu village, which is north Hebron. My family became refugees in 1948 when the Israeli Occupation occupied our village. I hope to be something in the future; to help my people. I want to do something for my people and our future in the refugee camp.”

Linda Al-Azzeh

“Hi, my name is Linda. Sorry about my voice, I have a cold at the moment. Hopefully, the next time you hear me, my voice will sound better. Anyway, let me tell you about myself. I’m 19. I study engineering at Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron. At this stage, I’m not sure which type of engineering I’ll end up doing. Unlike most of the Radio Lajee crew, I live in Al Azza Camp. It’s one of 3 refugee camps in Bethlehem. My family came from Beit Jibreen, a farming village not far from Hebron. In 1948, Israeli soldiers attacked Beit Jibreen, destroying all the houses and evacuating all the people. My dream is to return back to my home village and I hope that the United Nations Resolution 194, that promises the right of return for my people will one day soon happen.”

Sabreen Asad

“Hi, my name is Sabreen Asad, I am a Palestinian refugee. I’m 15 years old, I live in Doha City nearby Aida Camp. I am in 11th grade in high school and I like to study Math…a lot. I started coming to the Lajee Centre 5 years ago, because I like to dance Dabke because it’s our tradition. I hope when you listen to the Lajee Radio, that you learn about us; our tradition and our culture… and also that we are normal people – just like you.”

Miras Al Azzeh

“Hi, how are you? I’m Miras Al Azzeh, I live in Aida Camp. I’m from Beit Jibreen. I’m 15 years old and have 1 brother and 2 sisters. When I finish my school, I want to travel…to any country outside of Palestine. Then, I’ll come back to my country…to work here. I hope that you learn things about Palestine – to know about our country. I think one day Palestinian people will return to their homes. I think this dream will be soon.”

Saja Ajarma

“Hello! My name is Saja. I’m 14 years old. I have 1 brother and 2 sisters. I live in Aida Camp but my family originally comes from Ajur, north of Hebron. We have been here as refugees since 1948. My hobbies are reading and chatting to friends on the internet. I like my school and my friends…and my dream is freedom for Palestine.”

Rowayed Nidal

“My name is Rowayed, I’m 11 years old and I’m a student. When I was young, I played football but now I play basketball. When I finish school, I want to go to university to study law. Then, one day, I hope to become a judge because I want to ensure equality and justice for all the people of the world.”

Amani Asad

“Hello, my name is Amani Asad. I am 16 years old. My favourite subject in school is maths…I hope when you listen to me and my friends, that you learn about Palestine and the problems happening because of the occupation.”

Khalid Issa

“Hello, how are you? My name is Khalid. I’m 20 years old. I live in Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem. I study law at the Arabic University in Abu Dis village on the outskirts of Jerusalem inside the Palestinian side of the wall. I study law because I believe that this knowledge is extremely necessary for the Palestinian people. When I’m not at the university, I am a volunteer at Lajee Centre. For the last 5 years, I have been teaching children Dabke dance. I teach them Dabke because Dabke dance is the traditional dance for the Palestinian people and the children must know their history, the tradition and culture of Palestine. Thank you.”

Mohammad Waled Al Azza

“Marhaba! My name’s Mohammad Al Azza. I’m 18 years old, I live in Aida Camp and have 2 sisters and 4 brothers. I’m passionate about music – I like to play the tabla and my favourite sport is football….I also like to make noises in the microphone: [makes noises / laughs]”

Maysan Said

“My name is Maysan I’m in 9th Grade my favourite subjects are science and maths. I live in Aida Camp with my 2 brothers and 4 sisters and I’m the 3rd child in the family. When I grow up I want to be a doctor specialising in the heart because i’d like to save lives, especially here in Palestine.”

Abed Al Fattah

“My name is Abed Al Fattah – I’m 14 years old. I live in Aida Camp… I live with my family – I have 2 sisters and 3 brothers. My father is an English teacher. When I finish studying, I want to be a dentist especially for the children. My hobbies are swimming and reading especially poetry.”

Athal Al Azza

“Hello! My name’s Athal and I’m 12 years old. I like to sing, to dance…and I like watching TV. I want to be a fashion designer because I like to draw but I also want to be a doctor and famous singer. My favourite singer is Shakira and I love the music to the movie, ‘Camp Rock‘. I like playing with my cousin’s small baby and I like reading poetry by Mahmoud Darwish.”

  1. Salaam to All,
First, I want to congratulate all of you, the organizers and the participants. This is great. I enjoyed listening and seeing all of you.
I miss you all and see you next summer.
By the way, can I add myself??

    Love,
    Nidal

  2. I’m keen to hear the truth of your lives as told by the youth there in the camp, first hand. Instead of the western news media reporting which is mostly biased one way or the other. This is a wonderful project and I will be stopping by regularly to read and learn because I know nothing of life there.

Best wishes and love to you all, from Australia.

  5. These stories are great, and provide an honest, human perspective as well as wonderful creativity about something thats often talked about but rarely understood.

Wishing you all stay safe whilst the senseless violence continues, and hopefully that stops immediately, and keep up the good work!

    I will be listening.

I hope I said it right, Happy prosperous and peaceful New year 2009 to everyone at Aida Camp, especially to everyone I know over there.
i’ll be following your great project more this year, I promise and keep in touch with you because I miss you very much.
It is very sad everything that is going on in Gaza right now.
We’ve had many many demonstrations in europe lately. I tried to participate to the french one in Paris right after new year, everyone os so disappointed. We were proud to have among us personnalities of the little screen, which showed that noone forgets about what is going on on your side and everyone feels sorry, though this time of year should be a time of happiness and gatherings and joy.
I was also happy to hear that french jews gathered silently in front of the Israeli ambassy to show their disapproval. This means a lot too.
I hope you are all going well despite the horror of this war, that I can see you very soon happy and in health.

God bless you all in Bethléhem.

    Leila, your forever french friend

Many many kisses to little douda 🙂

I will be making a presentation tomorrow to a group of high school teachers and will be introducing them to Radio Lajee so that they might use it in the classroom to educate American students. I am so excited and I am sure they will love it as a teaching tool. I hope inshaallah to begin work as a high school teacher myself soon and will use Radio Lajee with students in my own class.
